When it comes to cities famous for their foodie offerings – Paris, London and Rome all fit the bill.
But although this city made headlines for sending an icy blast to Britain at the back end of last year – dubbed the Troll from Trondheim – you mightn’t have known about it for its gastronomic or tourism credentials.
The city – which served as the capital of Norway until 1217 – came out top of a list of ‘The most underrated European cities and towns’ in Condé Nast Traveller.
It sits on the south shore of Trondheim Fjord at the mouth of the River Nidelva and has a population of just over 200,000.
The rundown of top cities said: “Between 1050 and 1536, Trondheim was one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Europe.
The city has one of the best hotels in Norway (Britannia Hotel) and several Michelin-starred restaurants.”
The top restaurants in the city includes FAGN and FAGN Bistro – both serving modern cuisine – with a Michelin star and Bib Gourmet respectively.
Also on the Michelin radar is Speilsalen – which boasts a Michelin star – and Spontan Vinbar.
But as well as filling up on delicious food there are lots of other fun things to do in the city such as a trip to the beautiful Nidaros Cathedral, the medieval Archbishop’s Palace and the Sverresborg Trøndelag Folk Museum.
There are riverboat rides on offer and keen skiers are in for a treat as World Cup winter sports competitions are held regularly at Granåsen, a Trondheim ski centre.
The city is also known as Norway’s capital of technology. This is due to the significant technology-oriented institutions headquartered there including the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).
Visitors to the city have been impressed by all it has on offer, sharing their experiences on to travel website Tripadvisor.
Thousands have reviewed the highest-rated tourist attraction in the city – Nidaros Cathedral – on the website.
One said: “I normally don’t care much for churches, but this one took my breath away. It is absolutely stunning – inside and out.”
Another said: “Loved every moment of this experience. The music, the architecture, and the history. The stained glass was beautiful.”
