Aldi has announced an updated list of priority locations across the UK where it is hoping to find sites for new supermarkets, as part of its mission to make affordable food more accessible to more communities.
The UK’s fourth-largest supermarket recently invited the public to suggest areas they felt were most in need of an Aldi. After analysing thousands of responses, the retailer has revealed list of priority towns and cities where it is actively looking to secure sites.
Aldi currently operates more than 1,050 stores across the UK and is working towards a long-term goal of 1,500. The supermarket says it is investing in a £1.6bn expansion plan for its store network and bringing its “unbeatable value” to even more communities.
Giles Hurley, chief executive Officer for Aldi UK and Ireland, said: “Shoppers are still finding things difficult and that’s why we’re staying laser-focused on doing what Aldi does best – offering customers great quality products at unbeatable prices.
“Nobody else is making the same commitment to everyday low prices – no clubs, no gimmicks, no tricks – just prices our customers can trust, and quality they can depend on.
“Since we opened our first UK store more than 35 years ago, we’ve brought high-quality, affordable groceries to almost 800 towns and cities, but there are hundreds more communities that don’t have an Aldi nearby.
“We’re more determined than ever to meet that demand, and that’s why we’re investing a record £1.6bn over the next two years, to bring Aldi prices closer to millions more customers.”
Each potential site should be able to accommodate a 20,000 sq ft store with around 100 parking spaces, ideally near a main road with good visibility and access.
Aldi is also seeking sites for its Aldi Local format in Central London zones 1 and 2, which require smaller spaces, around 5,000 sq ft of trading area plus 3,000 sq ft of ancillary space.
