Malcolm Brogdon stunned the basketball world by suddenly retiring on Wednesday just days before the 2025-26 NBA regular season was due to start. The announcement confirmed the star guard was quitting the sport despite penning a deal with the New York Knicks during the summer offseason. Brogdon had been earmarked as a crucial part of Mike Brown’s revamped Knicks roster after coming in to replace Tom Thibodeau.

Nevertheless, the 32-year-old will now be observing the NBA from home rather than battling among the globe’s elite players.  The New York Post report that Brogdon was expected to secure a spot on the Knicks’ final roster. While playing for New York in Abu Dhabi, the star guard thought he would serve as a key “rotation player” for Brown’s team. Ultimately, nine seasons in the NBA had taken its toll on the former Rookie of the Year champion.

The New York Post say it dawned on Brogdon in camp that some of the desire and hunger to continue battling at the pinnacle of basketball was absent, prompting Brogdon to officially end his playing days.

It was merely three seasons ago that the 32-year-old claimed the Sixth Man of the Year award whilst representing the Boston Celtics, having since played for the Portland Trail Blazers, Washington Wizards before recently joining the Knicks on a training camp deal.

“Today, I officially begin my transition out of my basketball career,” his statement, released Wednesday, began. “I have proudly given my mind, body, and spirit to the game over the last few decades.

“With the many sacrifices it took to get here, I have received many rewards. I am deeply grateful to have arrived to this point on my terms and now to be able to reap the benefits of my career with my family and friends. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, to all who have had a place in my journey.”

The veteran departs the NBA on a high despite struggles over his final two campaigns. Injuries limited him to just 63 appearances across that period.

During his stint with Washington last term, the point guard featured in merely 24 games – making 14 starts – for a rebuilding Wizards outfit, posting 12.7 points, 4.1 assists, and 3.8 rebounds across 23.5 minutes per outing. He also brought invaluable guidance to the dressing room, displaying seasoned leadership qualities.

The previous campaign saw the playmaker appear in 39 contests, beginning 25 of them, whilst averaging nearly 16 points per match alongside 5.5 assists and 3.8 rebounds in just under 30 minutes for Portland. His 2022-23 stint with Boston yielded Sixth Man of the Year honours.

Brogdon also enjoyed three years with Milwaukee from 2016 to 2019 before spending three years in Indiana, where he flourished as a regular starter. In Indianapolis, Brogdon posted an average of 18.9 points, 6.5 assists and 5.1 rebounds in 32.7 minutes per game, starting all 110 games he played in.
