The UK is bracing for Storm Floris with winds of up to 85mph forecast to hit the nation. The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for wind from 6am tomorrow (Monday, August 4) until 6am on Tuesday (August 5).

The forecaster said the storm will bring “unseasonably strong and potentially disruptive winds” to the UK. They are warning of potential “danger to life” from flying debris, damage to buildings, and power cuts. Travel disruption is also likely, with road, rail, air, and ferry services set to be disrupted.

A map shows the region affected by the weather warning, which is in place across Northern Wales, Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, York, Middlesbrough, Newcastle, and Carlisle.

The yellow wind warning also covers the whole of Scotland. The Met Office expects exposed areas, including coastal and mountainous areas, to be hit by winds of 85mph.

The forecaster said: “Storm Floris will bring a spell of unusually windy weather for the time of year across the northern half of the UK early next week. The strongest winds are most likely to occur across Scotland during Monday afternoon and night, although there remains some uncertainty in the depth and track of Floris.”

Most inland areas will see gusts of between 40mph and 50mph, while exposed coasts and high grounds will see stronger winds of 60mph to 70mph.

The Met Office added: “There is a chance of a spell of even stronger winds developing for a time, with inland gusts of 60-70 mph and 85 mph along exposed Scottish coastlines and hills.

“Winds will first ease in the west during later Monday, but remain very strong overnight until early Tuesday in the east. Heavy rain may also contribute to the disruption in places.”

People are being urged to prepare for the warning, including making sure loose items such as trampolines, garden furniture, and sheds are secured. Motorists are also advised to check travel conditions before they set off.

Those living in coastal areas are being warned of large waves. The Met Office also advises people to be careful while walking near cliffs.

The forecaster said: “Be prepared for weather warnings to change quickly. When a weather warning is issued, the Met Office recommends staying up to date with the weather forecast in your area.”
