Special military celebrations to be held as King Charles marks one year since Coronation

King Charles is marking one year since his sumptuous Coronation, with a special Royal Gun Salute being held today in central London in honour of the occasion.

The Royal Parks shared the news on their social media this morning, as they announced that the salute would be fired in Green Park, close to Buckingham Palace, at midday.

They wrote on X: “Notice: special military celebrations will be held in London today to mark the first anniversary of the coronation of Their Majesties The King and Queen.

“A Royal Gun Salute will be fired by @KingsTroopRHA (King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery Battery) in The Green Park at midday today, Monday 6 May, 2024.”

The day of the Coronation itself saw further military prestige, including a procession from Westminster Abbey to the Palace, an RAF fly-past and a Royal Salute by 4000 troops in the Palace gardens.

The Royal Parks added that in order to keep the public safe, “several footpaths & the Constitution Hill cycle lane will remain closed for a period of time. A pedestrian route will be maintained along Con Hill.

“Advice: those walking dogs are advised to avoid the area during the salute.”

Conservative MP Penny Mordaunt, who served as sword-bearer for the ceremony, paid tribute to the King and Queen on the anniversary of their crowning.

She wrote for Express.co.uk: “There was nothing about the Coronation that was trite or out of date. Few looked on at the ancient spectacle and questioned its relevance. Many were proud.

“We all bore witness to a service of duty and love. It was an antidote to a cynical world. It was a celebration of who we are and what unites us. Those who protect us. Those that serve us.

“The congregation was testament to all the greatness our nation has produced: its charities, its creativity, its communities, its industry, those who step up and take responsibility.”

Last week King Charles made his much-anticipated return to royal duties, three months after it was announced that he had been diagnosed with an undisclosed type of cancer.
