If you’re looking for a last-minute break without huge crowds of tourists, one Spanish resort should be on your list.
The Canary Islands have long been a beloved destination for Brits, owing to its year-round sunny weather, stunning beaches, and its close distance to the UK.
Last year, the Spanish-owned archipelago, situated off the coast of northwestern Africa, welcomed an impressive 15.5 million international tourists.
The majority flocked to Tenerife – the largest island known for the renowned Siam Waterpark and a vibrant nightlife – while Gran Canaria was a close second, drawing in 6.2 million and 4 million foreign holidaymakers respectively.
The bustling hotspot of Playa del Ingles, renowned for its golden sands stretching nearly three kilometres and a magnet for sun-seekers, volleyball enthusiasts, and surfers alike, is often teeming with tourists – but a TikTok user known as Explore Canary has unveiled a surprisingly serene vista of the resort, reports the Mirror.
The footage reveals a tranquil beach scene devoid of the usual throngs and rows of deckchairs. “Today, 3 February, [it’s] 24C!” the video’s caption exclaims.
“Good start for this month. Are you going to Gran Canaria in February?”
While the Canary Islands remain a perennial favourite for British holidaymakers, the months of February and March are considered off-peak, promising quieter beaches, peaceful nights, and the luxury of dining without the need for reservations.
The mercury is set to soar above the usual 18-19C around this time of year, with some days promising even more sizzling temperatures.
Travel experts at TUI said: “While there may be occasional showers, they are typically short-lived, and the majority of days remain sunny and dry.
“This makes February an excellent time to explore the island’s natural beauty, including its stunning beaches, volcanic landscapes, and picturesque villages.”
People looking for a winter escape can jet off to Gran Canaria from major UK airports such as London, Manchester, Liverpool, and Glasgow, with direct flights available throughout February.
Savvy travellers can snag return tickets for as low as £33 if dates are flexible – just remember to pack a jumper for cooler evenings.
It comes as the Gran Canarian government has opened a public consultation asking citizens for their opinion on the island’s tourism model. The 11-question survey will remain open until the end of the month (February 28) and has already resulted in talks of a hotel ‘ban’.
