SNP crisis as just one living person made major donation in 2023 with rest from the dead

The SNP received just one major donation from a living person last year with the rest coming from the deceased.

Electoral Commission figures show that a contribution of £5,000 was made by one living donor in 2023.

However, Humza Yousaf’s party was left £253,000 as bequests left in the wills of supporters who have died, MailOnline reports.

All donations to political parties worth more than £500 have to be registered.

The figures also show that the SNP received £1.6 million in taxpayers’ money, with £1.35 million coming from Westminster funds to help opposition parties with costs.

It comes as the nationalist party has faced a chaotic year in the wake of Nicola Sturgeon’s shock resignation.

It is facing a police probe into its finances which has seen a series of senior figures arrested before being released without charge pending further investigation.

The investigation has seen officers swoop on Ms Sturgeon’s Glasgow home and the SNP’s headquarters in Edinburgh.

Operation Branchford centres on how more than £600,000 in donations to the party earmarked for an independence referendum has been used.

The SNP was contacted for comment.
