Snow forecast: UK blasted by 'double snow bomb' as Arctic freeze hits within hours

Britain is set to be battered by brutal weather conditions as a “double snow bomb” is likely to hit the country with temperatures plummeting to -2C.

Latest weather maps show that parts of Scotland will be blanketed by snow as soon as tomorrow (March 15).

According to the latest maps, the wintry conditions will begin to set in at around midnight with the possibility of snow in areas such as Inverness and Fort William. The areas could see about 2cm of snowfall per hour, maps show.

WXCharts maps show that the snowy conditions will continue on Saturday (March 16) at around 9pm.

Jim Dales, a meteorologist with British Weather Services, told Express.co.uk: “By the time we reach the weekend, there is a switch and the airstream will come from the north, which means it will turn colder again.”

While many parts of Scotland will see snowfall, areas further down south will be battered by heavy rainfall this weekend.

Temperatures will also be much milder south of the border. London should expect 4-5C on Saturday morning, which could heat up to 10C in the afternoon.

The south east could even record overnight temperatures as high as 7C.

Jo Farrow, a weather expert from Netweather, added: “The occlusion from the second low will pull southwards on Friday, away from Ireland and slowly down Britain.

“This allows colder air to flow down from the north ready for a clear Friday night. Next, a large Atlantic low pressure begins to edge towards the UK at the weekend.

“This will bring more widespread rain, heading northeastwards through Saturday along with milder air. It clears to a cooler Sunday with bright spells but plenty of showers from the west.”

Today:

A band of cloud and rain moves northwards across northern England, Northern Ireland and Scotland. Can be heavy on western hill. Elsewhere rather cloudy, a few showers developing here and there during the afternoon. Feeling mild, particularly overnight.

Tonight:

Band of rain starts edging southwards. Clearer spells to the north of this with the odd shower and localised frost. South of band it remains mild and breezy but cloudy.

Friday:

Rain band continues to move southwards, but otherwise sunny with some showers, possible thunder at times and wintry for Scottish mountains. Colder than Thursday but remains mild in the south.

Outlook for Saturday to Monday:

Turning cooler and more settled on Saturday, with a widespread frost in the North. Turning milder and unsettled again from the West through Saturday afternoon.
