Skateboarding legend Rodney Mullen to host sessions in Malibu

Skateboarding icon Rodney Mullen will roll into Malibu next week to treat locals kids to a skate session.

On Wednesday, May 6, Mullen will host a youth skateboarding event at Malibu Bluffs Park at 4 p.m., giving riders of all levels a chance to learn from the man credited with inventing much of modern street skating.

“Participants will receive insights from one of the most influential figures in modern skateboarding,” the City of Malibu said in a statement.

The event is open to the public, but safety gear is mandatory, including helmets, elbow pads, knee pads and wrist guards.

Mullen’s appearance will shift indoors at 7 p.m., when he headlines the Malibu Library Speaker Series at Malibu City Hall at 8:30 p.m.

Reservations are required for the in-person program.

Known as the “Godfather of Modern Street Skating,” Mullen rose to prominence as a teenager and went on to dominate competitions while pioneering tricks still used today.

His reach has extended into film, documentaries, television, video games and print, cementing his status as a cultural force.

His off-board resume packs just as much punch.

Mullen is a Fellow at MIT’s Media Lab and a Distinguished Research Scholar appointed by the Smithsonian Institution.

He also serves as a scientific advisor to the C4 Foundation for active-duty Navy SEALs and has contributed to research on neuroscience, creativity, resilience and human performance for the National Academy of Sciences.

After co-founding a major skateboard company and selling it in 2001, Mullen helped launch multiple brands that turned fellow pros into business leaders.

He holds two patents and is widely credited with advancing modern board and wheel design.

More recently, he has bridged skate culture and tech, diving into Linux open-source computing, speaking at companies like IBM and Apple, and co-founding an augmented reality company in 2018 with partnerships involving Niantic and Apple.

Through it all, Mullen still skates two hours a day.

Malibu Mayor Bruce Silverstein called the visit a major win for the city.

“His influence extends far beyond skateboarding, and Malibu is excited to welcome him to inspire our community, especially our youth, to think creatively and push boundaries in their own lives,” Silverstein said. “It comes at such an exciting moment, with the completion of our new permanent skate park.”
