Six-year-old girl nearly died after meningitis missed by doctors

Charlotte Ward took daughter Niamh for an examination last February, fearing her headache, temperature and nausea were symptoms of the killer disease.

But doctors told her Niamh did not have a rash and therefore sent her home, suggesting Calpol.

A day later, Niamh’s condition worsened. She was taken to a different hospital but collapsed before medics could reach her.

Charlotte was told that if she had left it three minutes later Niamh wouldn’t have made it.

After battling for survival for two weeks in hospital, Niamh, now seven, beat the deadly condition.

Beauty therapist Charlotte, 28, who lives in Northampton with partner Jamie, 34, said: “It was horrendous watching her fight
for her life.

“We were on the brink of losing her but she made an amazing recovery and has managed to go back to school.

“I just want to warn other mums that meningitis doesn’t necessarily cause a rash and that health professionals do get it wrong, so trust your instinct.”
