Simple curtain ‘trick’ to cut energy bills by 30% in the winter and keep your home warm

According to an expert, using a simple curtain “trick” could cut bills by up to 30 percent.

Helen O’Connor, product manager at 247 Blinds & 247 Curtains, said: “Eliminating all draughts is a key way to reduce the need for central heating.

“Getting the right window dressing can help reduce your energy usage as heat loss through windows accounts for roughly 25 to 30 percent of the energy used in our homes.”

The expert recommended closing all curtains and blinds before it gets home.

She noted: “In winter months we have around six to eight hours of daylight, on average, which means for the other 18 hours of the day we should consider keeping our curtains and blinds shut.

“If you’re not going to be home in the day, consider keeping your curtains closed as this will help retain the heat throughout the day for when you come home.”

According to Safe Style Windows, around 18 percent of the total heat within a house is lost through the windows. This is caused by radiation, through glazing, and convection and conducted through the window frame.

If you’re looking to replace curtains, make sure to opt for thermal ones as they have a thick lining which will retain more heat than thinner materials.

Roman blinds are also a great option to help keep out the cold breeze and can be layered up with curtains for the best defence.

The expert continued: “Curtains that touch the floor are much more likely to trap heat and stop it from escaping through the windows in the day.

“You also want them to be tightly fitted against the wall or the window frame to leave less room for a gap where the airflow can move around.

“They should also be wider than the window frame, as this will close those all-important airflow gaps, this is why made-to-measure curtains are a great choice.”

When the curtains and blinds are closed, make sure the room temperature still reaches around 18C.

Andy Kerr, Founder at Boxt, said: “The ideal room temperature during the winter is between 18C and 20C. During the winter months, it can be tempting to crank up the thermostat.

“However, experimenting with different temperatures can both reduce energy bills and potentially lead to a better night’s sleep.

“Instead of setting one temperature across the whole day, try switching between daytime and nighttime temperatures, as this may make you more comfortable at home and also reduce your energy usage.”
