Simple 35p method removes limescale from shower heads in 'an hour' without harsh chemicals

Keeping shower heads clean is really important as this is what washes your hair and your body.

If the flow of water coming out of the shower head is lower than it used to be or the water squirts out in different directions then it’s likely the head is clogged with dirt and mineral deposits.

Nancy Emery, a cleaning expert at Drench has shared how to remove limescale from shower heads without using harsh chemicals.

While there are lots of limescale-removing products out there, many of them are expensive, contain harsh chemicals and can smell pungent.

Instead, Nancy recommends using white vinegar to remove limescale from shower heads.

She explained: “To clean well, scrub off loose dirt or limescale with a scouring sponge or an old toothbrush.

“Then, fill a plastic sandwich bag with white vinegar and submerge the shower head inside.

“Secure the bag with an elastic band so it stays in place and leave it to soak for around an hour.

“Remove the shower head from the bag and run the hot water to clean out any deposits which may be trapped around the nozzles.

“Finally, using your old toothbrush or scourer, scrub off any excess dirt or limescale that hasn’t been removed by the vinegar.

“You can then rinse the shower head with a separate tap to remove any last mineral deposits and that vinegar smell.”

White vinegar is acid which means it will break down the calcium carbonate that limescale is made from.

White vinegar can be bought online or from most local supermarkets and shops.

Sainsbury’s distilled vinegar costs 40p, Tesco Distilled Vinegar costs 35p and Dri-Pak white vinegar costs £2 from B&Q.

Lemon juice can also be used to remove limescale from shower heads as it’s also acidic.

Simply soak the shower head in a solution of water and lemon juice for 20 to 30 minutes before rinsing it with water.
