Sick moment pickpocket targeted tourist – with witness slammed for 'just filming'

Shocking footage shows the moment pickpockets targeted a couple of tourists – but bystanders just stood and filmed rather than intervening.

The incident took place in Piccadilly Circus, London, where a couple were walking unaware that they were being followed by a pair of pickpockets with their hands in their pockets.

During the video, one of the pickpockets appears to take something from the woman’s back pocket, but no one alerts her despite the incident taking place in view of hundreds of people.

It comes during an increase in pickpocketing in the capital.

Data from Transport for London estimated that sleight-of-hand robberies had doubled between 2021 and 2022, reaching a record high of 7,899.

But those who saw the video, which was posted on Twitter by London and UK Street News, seemed to be more shocked by the person filming and not stepping in than the crime itself.

One commenter replied: “Nice of them to just film.”

While another added: “Should’ve said something instead of just filming it.”

British Transport Police (BTP) has a number of tips for Londoners hoping to stop their valuables from being snatched by pickpockets.

They say people should avoid keeping phones in their back pockets and wear bags across the front of their bodies where they can see any unwanted hands lingering.

BTP officials also say people should avoid leaving devices on tables in bars and restaurants and keep any bags and pockets zipped if possible.
