Scratches on wooden floors vanished in seconds after wiping over 2 natural items

Wooden floors are a beautiful addition to any home and look especially lovely when polished or styled with rugs. However, anyone with natural wooden flooring knows how easily it can become scratched or scuffed.

Even varnished or lacquered floors aren’t immune — heavy furniture and frequent foot traffic can still leave their mark. That’s exactly what happened to the floor in my bedroom after we recently moved our bed: the wood ended up scraped. Looking for a quick, easy, and natural fix, I decided to try a 1950s housewife cleaning hack that uses just two ingredients most people already have at home — tea bags and olive oil.

It might sound odd to rub tea and olive oil into your floors, but the combination actually works really well.

Black tea is not only a popular drink but also contains tannic acid, which can gently clean and tint wood surfaces.

When applied to scratches on medium or dark-toned wood, the tea seeps into the exposed areas and subtly stains them, making the damage far less noticeable. Unlike harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive methods, black tea won’t cause further harm to the wood.

Olive oil, on the other hand, helps restore the wood’s natural shine and enhances the beauty of its grain.

How to remove scratches from wooden floors

First, I started by sweeping and vacuuming the area to remove any dust or debris.

Then, I put the kettle on to boil and added two tea bags to a mug — a heatproof bowl works just as well. I let the tea brew for 10 to 15 minutes to allow the water to cool slightly, then squeezed out any remaining liquid from the tea bags before throwing them away.

Once the tea had cooled (you don’t want to burn your hands), I dipped a clean cloth into the mixture. It’s really important to do a patch test on your floors first to make sure it doesn’t cause any discolouration or damage.

If everything looks fine, you can start gently wiping the cloth over the scratched areas. I noticed a difference straight away — the colour began to even out, and the scratches looked almost invisible.

You might need to adjust the number of tea bags depending on how dark your floors are. One of the best things about this mixture is that you can store any leftovers for future use.

Once the area was completely dry, I dipped another cloth into a small amount of olive oil and gently buffed it into the wood. It gave the floors a lovely shine, and the scratches ended up barely noticeable.

This natural method is such an easy and affordable way to refresh your wooden floors without using harsh chemicals. It only takes a few minutes and uses items you probably already have at home — a cleaning hack I’ll be doing again.
