Schoolgirl, 10, dies in swimming pool in half-term tragedy at UK city's swimming pool


Jessica Rennie, 10, has been named as the schoolgirl who died at a swimming pool in Aberdeen.

The 10-year-old lost her life after getting into difficulty in the water at Northfield Pool in the Kettleshill Crescent area of the Scottish city.

The incident which led to her death took place at around 8pm on Monday. She was rushed to hospital, but could not be saved.

Police are currently probing the tragedy, but are not treating it as suspicious.

Local man Yilmaz Huseyin told Scottish publication the Daily Record that he had created a GoFundMe page to help Jessica’s devastated mother with funeral costs.

So far, the crowdfunder has raised more £11,000. The target is set at £15,000.

Setting up the page, he wrote: “We have created a go fund me for the beautiful Jessica who tragically lost her life on Monday at swimming… no family should ever have to be prepared for such a loss can the city of Aberdeen and afar please come together and donate as much or little as you can and help the family of Jessica give her the best send off we can.

“Your all in our hearts and thoughts sleep tight Jessica.”

Jessica’s family asked for privacy at this time.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 8pm on Monday, 12 February, 2024, we were made aware a young female had got into difficulty in a swimming pool in Aberdeen.

“Emergency services attended, and a 10-year-old girl was taken to hospital where she later died.

“Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding her death, which is not being treated as suspicious.”
