While Ryanair is known for its cheap flights, with seats sometimes on offer for less than £20 one-way, one thing it isn’t known for is a lenient luggage allowance. Passengers who exceed their allowance of one small free luggage item per person could face unexpectedly high fees at the airport.
However, as well as taking into account the measurements of your carry-on luggage, the airline is also urging passengers to slow down when packing their bags and pay a little more attention.
Ryanair shared some “packing tricks you need to know” to help customers make the most of their luggage allowance, whether they are travelling with a free cabin bag or have paid for Priority.
“Don’t pack a rucksack in a rush, warned the airline. A little bit of forward planning will definitely pay off.
“Place heavy items in the middle of your rucksack, or as close to your back as possible – this will put less strain on your back when you’re walking.”
According to Ryanair, there is also one “golden rule” you should follow when packing your bag to ensure you make the most of the space available.
“Follow the golden rule of rolling your clothes rather than folding,” they said. “Not only will this give you more room, but you’ll also find that your clothes are less creased. “
If you are checking in your luggage, the airline also advises making sure your rucksack is properly fastened before sending it off.
Ryanair said: “At check-in, tie all rucksack straps together neatly to prevent them from getting tangled in the carousel when you land.”
All Ryanair fares include one small personal bag which can be brought on board, such as a handbag or laptop bag, but this can only measure up to 40 x 20 x 25cm and must fit under the seat in front of you. Anything more than that and you’ll have to pay extra.
Passengers can pay for Priority which entitles them to board via the Priority boarding queue at the gate, plus take one small personal bag measuring 40 x 20 x 25cm and a 10kg bag measuring 55 x 40 x 20cm.
If you wish to check in a bag, you can add a 10kg or 20kg check-in bag to your booking which must be dropped off at the check-in desk before security. Both come at an additional cost.
