Russia's shock move to introduce nuclear survival training into schools as tensions erupt

In August, Putin introduced mandatory security and defence classes in all schools.

Modules also include basic military training, how to use a Kalashnikov assault rifle and hand grenades.

A Just Russia party chief Sergey Mironov said in 2022 that the reintroduction of the preparatory military courses would “systematically prepare citizens for a possible confrontation with the enemy.”

Similar courses regularly ran across the Soviet Union up until the curriculum was changed following its collapse.
