Russia declares 'direct confrontation' with NATO as US says there's no 'imminent threat'

The Kremlin warned Thursday that NATO and Russia have “slipped to the level of direct confrontation.”

Spokesman Dmitry Peskov made the declaration after Sweden became the latest country to officially join the military alliance last month.

NATO was “already involved in the conflict surrounding Ukraine (and) continues to move towards our borders and expand its military infrastructure towards our borders”, he told reporters.
This comes despite the fact that US officials maintain that Russia poses no direct threat to NATO states as it continues its bloody war in Ukraine.

“We do not see an imminent threat to NATO territory,” US ambassador to NATO Julianne Smith told reporters on Tuesday.
