Reserved primarily for members of the British Royal Family, foreign royals, heads of state, celebrities, and former champions, all eyes are often on the Royal Box at Wimbledon and all movements are caught on camera. But one particular member of the Royal Family was caught falling asleep whilst watching the Men’s singles final on July 13.
Lord Frederick Windsor attended Wimbledon for the Men’s Singles final on Sunday with his wife, Sophie Winkleman, and the couple sat in some of the best seats in the house on centre court. Lord Frederick is the son of Prince and Princess Michael of Kent, and is 54th in the line of succession to the British throne. His father, Prince Michael of Kent is a first cousin of the late Queen Elizabeth II.
The couple were photographed soaking up some of the sporting action, but forgetting all action was caught on camera.
Snaps from the event showed the royal with his eyes shut, and with one arm propping up his head, but he was caught dozing multiple times. After a little nap, he woke up, and clapped and cheered from the sidelines as the tennis tournament continued.
Frederick, 46, looked smart in a blue suit, a white shirt and a powder blue tie. Sophie, meanwhile, wore an elegant white dress peppered with tiny strawberries.
Actress, Sophie, also wore baroque-style pearl earrings and a pair of tortoiseshell sunglasses to shade her eyes from the sun. A fan of tennis, Lord Frederick Windsor also attended the Championships on day two, day nine and day 12.
The royal is not the only sporting spectator to appear to have fallen asleep at this year’s prestigious tennis tournament at SW19.
BBC viewers have reacted online after Hugh Grant appeared to “fall asleep” on centre court. The 64-year-old was seen attending Centre Court to watch the Men’s Singles Quarter-Final fixture between Novak Djokovic and Flavio Cobolli.
During one segment, the camera panned to the Royal Box where Hugh was sitting and wearing a pair of shaded sunglasses as his head with slightly tilted downwards. BBC Sport then shared the viral clip on X, adding the caption: “It’s all got a bit too much for Hugh Grant,” with a laughing face and sleeping emoji. Many fans who are watching the match also spotted Hugh and reacted to his appearance online.
The actor was at Centre Court alongside his wife, Anna Elisabet Eberstein. One person said on X: “Not even Djokovic can keep Hugh Grant awake today.”
