Royal expert hits out at social media rumours after Princesses Kate's operation

A royal expert has hit out at social media rumours about the Princess of Wales, telling people to “give her a break”.

Royal editor for the Mirror, Russell Myers, was on ITV’s Lorraine to discuss the stories of the day, including the online concern for Princess Kate.

Following her abdominal surgery in January, Kate has not been seen and is recovering at Anmer Hall in Sandringham, Norfolk. This has prompted social media users to speculate about her well-being.

Lorraine said: “I don’t think it’s nosiness necessarily, there’s maybe a little bit of that. I think people are genuinely concerned because there’s huge affection for her and people are worried.”

Myers replied: “If I had a penny for every time someone asked me what’s going on. What I will say is Kate deserves to have her privacy respected in this sense. And I think everybody can agree with that.

“Kensington Palace have always said, that once she returns home she is not going to be in action until after Easter. But the social media rumour mill goes crazy.”

Lorraine described the rumours about the Princess as “really horrible, nasty things” and asked people to “give her a break, cut her a bit of slack”.

Myers added: “Everyone needs to calm down a bit. It’s a medical matter and very different from the King who was willing to speak about it.

“She’s having a very different experience and she needs her rest. The palace has said she is continuing to recover well.”

Lorraine and Myers also spoke about Kate’s uncle, Gary Goldsmith, being announced as a Celebrity Big Brother contestant.

Myers said: “He’s a colourful character and maybe we’ve all got a relative like Gary. I think that’s being kind but he’s certainly opinionated and not afraid to speak his mind.

“I’m not sure whether he’ll be speaking about Kate Middleton and the Middleton family. He’s certainly been vocal about his opinion of Harry and Meghan and how they’ve run roughshod over the royal family.

“The headlines today say his sister, Kate’s mother, has been reading him the riot act so I think he will be good value, let’s wait and see.”
