Rishi Sunak hit with New Year nightmare as popularity hits record low in bombshell poll

Rishi Sunak’s popularity has dropped to its lowest-ever level in a poll of Tory members.

The Prime Minister has a net satisfaction score of minus 26.5 in Conservative Home’s final Cabinet league table of 2023.

Mr Sunak is down from 25.4 in last month’s survey of rank-and-file members.

He is second from bottom with only immigration minister Michael Tomlinson below with a rating of minus 27.2.

It has been a difficult month for Mr Sunak who saw off a Tory rebellion over his Rwanda Bill, which those on the right of the party warn does not go far enough, but now faces a struggle to pass the legislation in the new year.

Other senior members of the Cabinet in red territory include Chancellor Jeremy Hunt, Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden, Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron, Housing Secretary Michael Gove and Tory chairman Richard Holden.

Business and Trade Secretary Kemi Badenoch, a former leadership candidate who is popular for her combative stance on woke issues, tops the league table with a score of 63.9.

Veterans Minister Johnny Mercer and Commons Leader Penny Mordaunt come jointly next with both of 47.5.

Esther McVey, who has been dubbed the Minister for Common Sense after returning to the Cabinet in Mr Sunak’s reshuffle in November, comes after Mr Mercer and Ms Mordaunt with a net popularity rating of 30.8.

Mr Hunt, who is expected to slash taxes in March’s Budget ahead of the next general election, is third from bottom on minus 16.9.

Mr Gove is just behind on minus 15.1, while Mr Dowden has a score of minus 10.5 and Mr Holden is on minus 6.4.

Lord Cameron, who made a sensational political comeback as Foreign Secretary, has a net satisfaction rating of minus 5.3.
