Bathrooms are one of the most humid rooms in the house and are susceptible to mould build-up thanks to steam and water hitting the walls every time you have a shower or bath.
Mould isn’t just a cosmetic problem as it can start to spread to other rooms in your home if it’s not removed and the spores can trigger allergic and respiratory reactions, particularly for people who suffer with asthma or have a weak immune system.
One of the main causes of mould in bathrooms is due to excess moisture in the air due to lack of ventilation after frequent showering, with condensation creating damp conditions which is ideal for mould growth.
It can also be caused by leaky pipes or poorly sealed shower stalls, as well as a lack of cleaning of bathroom surfaces allowing mould to thrive.
Thankfully, bathroom mould can be easily managed with a regular cleaning routine and it’s possible to remove the unsightly black spores with a simple home remedy using one natural item.
If mould is spot mould early enough you can easily treat it using a combination of tea tree oil and water, according to shower experts Mira Showers.
The company recommends using the essential oil as an alternative to vinegar, bicarbonate soda or bleach, which contains harsh chemicals, as it is a natural fungicide which makes it an excellent tool for banishing mould from bathroom tiles and grout.
Simply mix one teaspoon of tea tree oil with one cup of water in a spray bottle. Give the mixture a good shake and then apply it to bathroom surfaces. Let the solution dry for around an hour and then wipe it clean, removing any black mould spores.
An expert at Mira Showers says: “Without a regular bathroom cleaning routine, bacteria, limescale and mould can become a real problem. Clean and dry your bathroom regularly, including grout and hard-to-reach corners that are prone to mould.
“I recommend thoroughly cleaning your bathroom at least once a week to prevent mould buildup. Regular cleaning helps remove moisture, soap scum, and other residues that contribute to mould growth.”
Mira Showers also suggests using baking soda or lemons as other natural remedies to tackle minor mould issues in bathrooms.
