Cleaning ovens is a laborious task that can take hours and often involves using harsh, chemical-based cleaning products.
Rather than using harsh chemicals, Funeral Guide has shared an affordable method that leaves ovens sparkling clean – and it costs just £1.
The experts suggest using a trusted natural combination: baking soda and white vinegar.
Baking soda, also known as bicarbonate of soda, naturally cuts through grime without scratching surfaces, while white vinegar lifts away grease while adding shine.
Baking soda can be bought from Asda and Tesco for 65p. White vinegar can be purchased from Ocado for 50p and Tesco for 35p. Together, this works out at just £1.
If your oven is particularly dirty and has lots of stubborn baked-on stains, then you can add dish soap to the mix.
Step-by-step guide for cleaning your oven
First, remove the oven racks and soak them in warm, soapy water for 30 minutes to loosen any baked-on grease and grime.
The experts added: “Taking the racks out lets you focus on the oven’s interior and soaking helps make scrubbing them easier later on.”
Next, mix together half a cup of baking soda with a few tablespoons of water in a small bowl until a thick paste forms. The texture needs to resemble toothpaste.
Once the paste is mixed, apply it all over the inside of the oven using a sponge or cloth, being careful to avoid the heating elements.
The experts suggest: “Cover the greasiest spots thoroughly, and don’t forget the bottom, sides, and glass door.”
Allow the paste to sit for 12 hours or overnight.
Next, remove the paste using a damp cloth. Give particularly stubborn areas a gentle scrub.
Once removed, spray the white vinegar on the areas where the baking soda was applied. “The vinegar will react with the baking soda, causing a gentle fizz that helps lift off any remaining residue,” the experts added.
Once the fizzing has stopped, use a clean, damp cloth to wipe down the interior of the oven. For a final, streak-free finish, polish using a microfibre cloth.
The experts concluded: “A final polish with microfibre leaves it shiny and looking like new.”
Give the oven racks a scrub with a sponge to remove any leftover grease and grime before popping them back in the oven.
