Air fryers are a saviour appliance for many households as they are energy-saving and can cook dishes in half the time an oven can.
Despite air fryers being a game-changing gadget in kitchens, cleaning them can be a hassle.
Grease and burnt-on bits of food stick to the basket – and it’s worse when your air fryer basket has holes.
Taking to Instagram, Ciara Turkey, otherwise known as @themummmyfairy, warned against the viral air fryer cleaning hack that involves adding water and dish soap to the air fryer basket before putting it on for several minutes.
She said: “You may not know this, but things like washing up liquid have what’s called as a “flashpoint”.
“So not only could this be a fire risk but it also can create chemical gases/toxins that they attach themselves to inside your air fryer.”
Instead, Claire recommends pairing dish soap with baking soda in boiling water without switching on the device.
She starts the video by claiming that a “safe and easy” way to clean your air fryer is to just put in a squirt of washing-up liquid, a quarter cup of baking soda and fill it up with boiling water.
Then just leave the solution to sort and get to work for around 20 minutes before pouring it out and giving it a rinse with warm water.
After, just wipe down the basket with a paper towel and the air fryer should be “like brand new”.
With this method, Claire demonstrated that there’s absolutely no need for any scrubbing.

In response, Claire replied: “I’m sorry it didn’t work for you, you could add in some lemon too? But I find baking soda does the job for me.”
