Pro-Palestine protesters target dozens of MPs in 'litany of menace'

Almost 40 MPs and councillors have been the targets of intimidation by pro-Palestinian activists in what a leaked dossier has described as a “litany of menace”.

From verbal abuse to disruptive protests, the document indicates that the Israel-Hamas war has opened the floodgates of abuse, underscoring warnings by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak earlier this month about a “shocking increase in extremist disruption”.

The analysis – put together by a counter-extremism analyst who asked to remain anonymous – suggests the barracking of politicians has become widespread to the point of being routine.

Specifically the document, shared with the Sunday Telegraph, highlights at least 38 incidents which occurred between January 1 and March 15.

While representatives of both major parties have been intimidated, most protests have focused on Labour Party members.

Police attended the regular constituency surged of shadow science minister Chi Onwurah on Friday.

Responding on X to one protester who branded her a “coward” for getting “a police escort out of your surgery”, she wrote: “The police came because your protest was becoming aggressive, banging on the library walls and hurling abuse, then running around the building, attacking my staff member’s car and jumping in front of traffic.”

Separately, a Haringey Council meeting was disrupted by activists, with one attendee saying: “They were literally frothing… screaming: ‘Haringey Council, you’re complicit, you’re committing genocide’ It’s really extreme, frighteningly so.”

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer and shadow foreign secretary David Lammy abandoned an event in Tottenham after the venue was picketed.

One placard on display read: “Lammy supports racist killings” and another said: “Genocidal Starmer Not Welcome In Tottenham.”

Incidents involved members of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC), the research suggests.

Commenting on the dossier, Lord Walney, the Government’s independent adviser on political violence and disruption, said: “This litany of menace highlights a clear pattern of intimidation of elected representatives by pro-Palestine activists.

“If this was protesters with the St George’s flag hijacking council meetings for a Right-wing cause that was nothing to do with local government, everyone would rightly demand action.

“So it’s time for all mainstream parties to stand up for their people against this thuggery and work to cut funding and support for organisations like the PSC who facilitate it.”

A Home Office spokesman said: “It is totally unacceptable that a tiny minority seek to intimidate democratically elected representatives and impose their views.

“Protests should never take place at an elected representative’s home address or seek to intimidate people at democratic venues and prevent people from entering. This is exactly why we brought in tough new powers and record funding to ensure the police can act swiftly to prevent disruption and protect our democracy.”
