Pringles announces major change to its iconic crisps from this week

Pringles crisps are known for their colourful cylinder tubes that are topped with a transparent plastic lid.

But from this week, fans of the uniquely shaped crisps will see a major change to the packaging that sits on the shelves of some 3,800 stores across the country.

Kellanova, the brand that owns Pringles, has swapped plastic for paper in the making of the iconic stackable packaging.

The new tubes are currently only available at Tesco and One Stop shops for now, though the rollout will continue across other supermarkets over the year.

Each chain has 2,800 and 1,000 stores nationwide, so there are plenty of places to buy the greener tubes already.

While the move has been made to improve the sustainability of the tubes, the new tubes are still only 90 percent paper.

That said, the paper tubes will eventually fully replace the iconic Pringles can that was originally launched in the 1960s.

The first design featured a steel base which has since been transformed into the new design.

Chris Silcock, UK managing director, said: “We know people want to reduce their impact on the planet and it’s our responsibility to improve the recyclability of our packaging.

“We’ve worked hard to develop and test a recyclable Pringles paper tube and we made a significant investment in new technology to enable our factories to produce it.”

The brand previously said it wants 100 percent of its packaging to be reusable, recyclable or compostable by the end of 2025.

As well as being widely recyclable, the Pringles cans also keep the crisps fresh and protect them from breaking to reduce food waste.

The greener change follows a similar move from a major crisp company, Walkers, which started rolling out paper packaging across their Walkers Baked multipacks on October 26, 2023.

Other snacks which have had a makeover recently include Mars bars. The chocolate treats were given a makeover with paper wrappers rather than plastic in May last year.
