Princess Kate's abdominal surgery 'came as a surprise' to friends close to the royals

Kate Middleton’s admission to hospital for abdominal surgery came completely out of the blue to close friends and those working with her.

The Princess of Wales was admitted to the London Clinic last week for the successful planned operation, which she is currently recovering from.

Kate, 42, is expected to be in hospital for up to 14 days and she is not expected to return to official duties until after Easter, however, it is thought she is carrying out some work from her hospital bed.

Prince William is currently holding up the fort at Adelaide Cottage and cancelled official visits and meetings, with no mentions of the duke in the official royal diary, the Court Circular, since Kate went into hospital.

Kate’s last public appearance was on Christmas Day at Sandringham when she was pictured walking with the rest of the Royal Family to the St Mary Magdalene church on the Sandringham estate.

Now a report by People magazine has suggested that news of her hospitalisation came as a complete surprise to William and Kate’s close circle of family, friends and even those who work with them.

The report says the princess spent her time at Anmer Hall in Norfolk catching up with friends after Christmas and celebrating her birthday on January 9.

News of Kate’s hospitalisation was announced by Kensington Palace last Wednesday coming just 90 minutes before Buckingham Palace revealed King Charles was due to undergo surgery for an enlarged prostate.

In a statement, Kensington Palace said it would not be commenting on the princess’s private medical details but confirmed the issue was non-cancerous.

The statement read: “The Princess of Wales appreciates the interest this statement will generate. She hopes that the public will understand her desire to maintain as much normality for her children as possible, and her wish that her personal medical information remains private.”

Last week Kate was said to be “doing well” in her recovery with William visiting her at her bedside. A source told the Sunday Times the pair had switched to a “100 percent family first, day job second” motto.

The source told the newspaper: “Her passion for the early years is clear – there will be a huge continuation of that campaign and she will be keen to be out continuing that conversation with the nation as soon as possible.”
