Princess Diana did one thing with her children that Prince William. Prince Harry explained in his autobiography Spare that Prince William “loathed it” when their mother would dress them in the same outfit as children.
He said that the now-Prince of Wales hated when “anyone made the mistake of thinking us a package deal”.
In the documentary Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy released in 2017, William and Harry spoke about their childhood wardrobes which often matched their mother’s looks.
Prince Harry jokingly said: “I genuinely think that she got satisfaction out of dressing myself and William up in the most bizarre outfits – normally matching.
“It was weird shorts and you know like, little sort of shiny shoes with the old clip on. Looking back at the photos it just makes me laugh – I just think: ‘How could you do that to us?’
“And then funnily enough, we got to the age when William would turn round and go: ‘Oh, this is ridiculous, you know, I’m the older brother, why do I have to be dressed the same as him?’
“And I’m sort of sitting there going: ‘Hang on a second, if you’re going to dress differently, I’m not going to be the only person dressed like this – this is just ridiculous!’”
This seems to have impacted how William parents his own children, with them rarely being seen in the same outfits, mainly sticking to coordinating colours.
One of the few times the two princes were seen in the same outfits was at last year’s Trooping the Colour, where both were pictured in smart suits and red ties.
Prince Harry also said in his memoir William even asked him to pretend they didn’t know each other when he started at Eton
“For the last two years, he explained, Eton had been his sanctuary,“ Harry wrote.
“No kid brother tagging along, pestering him with questions, pushing up on his social circle. He was forging his own life, and he wasn’t willing to give it up.”
