Prince William's visit to synagogue points to Royal Family entering 'modern' era

Prince William recently made a visit to the Western Marble Arch Synagogue and spoke about his concerns of growing antisemitism, which one royal expert sees as a sign of a “modern monarch in waiting.”

Daily Express US had the chance to speak to author Tom Quinn about William’s recent engagement.

Mr Quinn said: “It’s really interesting that William visited a synagogue at this particular time with the war going on in Gaza and concerns that the number of attacks on Jews have dramatically increased in the past few months.

“I say it’s interesting because generally the Royal Family tries to avoid saying anything that could even remotely be interpreted as political.

“And this could definitely be seen as political given that it is so closely tied into the situation in Israel and Gaza.”

William met with Renee Salt, a 94-year-old Holocaust survivor, who spoke to William about her current-day fears. William told Ms Salt: ”It must be horrible for all of you worrying about this and I’m sorry it’s got to this. It will get better.”

He is seeing a difference between William and those who came before him, that he has a “greater tendency” to speak more freely than his father or grandmother.

The royal author says: “In general, this could work really well and increase massively his popularity, but he has to be very careful as, constitutionally, the tradition has been that he stays out of politics.”

“I think he wants to make his views known even if now and then he strays into what might be seen as the political sphere. I think he sees it as part and parcel of being a modern monarch in waiting.”
