Prince Harry's 'guilty' Christmas gift to staff minutes before stepping back from royalty

Prince Harry surprised his staff with unexpected Christmas gifts, leaving them feeling ‘guilty’.

In his book ‘Spare’, the Duke of Sussex shared how he, Meghan Markle and two senior staff members were deep inside Buckingham Palace on January 8, 2020, preparing a statement for Instagram.

Despite it being past Christmas, Harry felt festive and wanted to show his appreciation to those close to him.

He found a Christmas tree near the main stateroom and took two soft corgi ornaments as gifts for the staffers.

Harry wrote: “I went out into the hall. There was a tall, beautiful Christmas tree, still brightly lit. I stood before it, reminiscing. I removed two ornaments, soft little corgis, and brought them back to the staffers.

“One each. ‘Souvenir of this strange mission,’ I said. They were touched. But a bit guilty.”

The staff were touched but felt a bit guilty. As they neared the final draft of the statement, they began to worry about their involvement being discovered and what it could mean for their jobs.

However, they were mostly excited, believing they were doing the right thing.

Their statement read: “After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution.

“We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family, and work to become financially independent while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen.”
