These scandals involved accusations about the prince, including by Epstein victim Virginia Giuffre, who claimed Andrew slept with her when she was 17. The prince has always denied these accusations and any accusations of wrongdoing.
In his 2023 memoir, Harry said he reassured Meghan, 44, when she feared their security would be removed when they left the UK – something which did happen.
The Duke reportedly told his wife before they knew they would lose their security: “Never. Not in this climate of hate. Not after what happened to my mother [Princess Diana]. Also, not in the wake of my Uncle Andrew.”
He then wrote how Andrew, 65, “was embroiled in a shameful scandal, accused of the sexual assault of a young woman and no one had so much suggested that he lose his security”.
He reportedly told Meghan: “Whatever grievances people had against us, sex crimes weren’t on the list.”
Prince Harry, 41, has not commented on the fact that Andrew has now stopped using his royal titles as a result of the latest scandals and accusations against him.
Andrew continues to deny all allegations and reiterated this in a statement on Friday. The statement read: “In discussion with The King, and my immediate and wider family, we have concluded the continued accusations about me distract from the work of His Majesty and the Royal Family. I have decided, as I always have, to put my duty to my family and country first. I stand by my decision five years ago to stand back from public life.
“With His Majesty’s agreement, we feel I must now go a step further. I will therefore no longer use my title or the honours which have been conferred upon me. As I have said previously, I vigorously deny the accusations against me.”
