“We’ve managed, we’ve actually done incredibly well, and to make sure you’ve met all the key people.”
Meghan said the royals were “so welcoming” to her, explaining: “I have [met them]! On both sides of his family. His mum’s side as well which has been really important to me too.
“But yes the family has been great, and over the past year and a half, we’ve just had a really nice time getting to know them and progressively helping me feel a part of not just the institution but also part of the family, which has been really, really special.”
However, in late 2022 when the Sussexes released their Netflix docuseries Harry & Meghan, the couple labelled their engagement interview a “rehearsed” and “orchestrated reality show”.
They also claimed they “weren’t allowed to tell our story because they didn’t want [that]”.
Meghan said: “It was, you know, rehearsed. So we did the thing out with the press and then we went right inside, took the coat off, sat down and did the interview. So it was all in that same moment.”
In another episode, the duchess claimed that the couple were told what to expect during the interview.
Meghan said: “Yeah, but also like, ‘Then there’ll be a moment where they’ll want to see the ring, so show the ring’… We weren’t allowed to tell our story because they didn’t want [it].”
Harry added: “We’ve never been allowed to tell our story.”
It was never specified if “they” was referring to the royals or the BBC, however Mishal Husain, who conducted the interview in 2017, dismissed the Sussexes’s claims and said: “We know recollections may vary on this particular subject but my recollection is very much ‘asked to do an interview and do said interview’.”
