Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's sly dig to William with 'change to Netflix film'

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are poised to make a significant alteration to their upcoming film adaptation of a best-selling novel, in a subtle jab at Prince William, a royal expert has claimed.

Netflix acquired the film rights to “Meet Me at the Lake,” a romance novel penned by Carly Fortune, with the intention of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex producing the film as part of their multi-million pound agreement.

The novel narrates the tale of a couple who encountered each other in their 30s, addressing challenges parallel to those experienced by the Sussexes in their personal lives.

These challenges encompass themes such as one character coping with the loss of a parent in a childhood car crash, postpartum depression, and other aspects related to mental health.

Now, a royal expert has claimed that the Sussexes will be making one key change when creating their adaptation of the film.

The Mail on Sunday’s assistant editor Kate Manzi said on Palace Confidential: “It’s a romantic story about characters called Will and Fern who meet at the lake surprisingly enough.”

Host Jo Elvin joked: “Surely that Will name will be changing” to which Ms Mandi replied: “I was thinking that because Will is the kind of very hot love interest in the novel.

“So, there’s no way they are going to allow those names. You can’t leave it as Will so he will definitely have his name changed I’m sure.”

Prince Harry‘s relationship with his elder brother, Prince William, has become strained, largely attributed to the controversial Netflix docuseries released by the Sussexes, followed by Harry’s revealing memoir, “Spare,” which included personal accusations against the future King.

There is currently no confirmation regarding the potential involvement of Meghan Markle, the former Suits actress, in the film adaptation.

Initial reports suggested that the Duke and Duchess had acquired the film rights to the book for around £3million ($3.8million). However, conflicting reports indicate that Netflix actually secured the rights, with the intention of the Sussexes producing the movie through their company, Archewell Productions.

Back in 2020, the couple inked a five-year, £78million ($100million) deal with Netflix, resulting in the release of a six-part docuseries in December that delved into their relationship, marriage, and their dramatic departure from the Royal Family.
