Prince Harry and Meghan Markle continue to dominate royal headlines again over the last few days following a bombshell article from Vanity Fair.
The Daily Mail’s Palace Confidential podcast host described how a previous cover article that appeared eight years ago in the publication was “a lot more glowing”.
Royal expert and Daily Mail’s diary editor, Richard Eden, said: “Let’s be clear, this is a massive blow. They will be devastated.”
He added Vanity Fair is a “prestigious” magazine and in 2017 Meghan was “thrilled” when she learned she was going to be on the cover the first time, with direct quotes from Meghan about how she “was in love”.
However, Richard explained there were various aspects of the interview “Meghan was unhappy about”. He explained there is wide speculation about the reasons behind Vanity Fair’s scathing piece: “It could have been Vanity Fair’s bad experience last time with the complaints that did cause aggregation and this is why the negative piece has been published.”
The US publication did not hold back from reviewing the couple’s life in America as part of a feature marking the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s five-year anniversary since quitting royal duties in 2020.
As well as taking a look at various deals they have had commercially since setting up home in Montecito, the article also took a look behind-the-scenes by interviewing a number of people, including those that have worked with the couple.
Neighbours in Montecito were also invited to share their verdicts on the couple, who are reportedly hardly ever seen in the area.
Some members of staff who worked on Meghan’s podcast, Archetypes were allegedly left needing “long-term therapy”.
A source told the publication: “She’s constantly playing checkers – I’m not even going to say chess – but she’s just very aware of where everybody is on her board. And when you are not in, you are to be thrown to the wolves at any given moment.”
It was also reported by sources that Prince Harry did not understand the impact his memoir Spare would have on the Royal Family when it was published back in 2023.
It is believed the bombshell memoir was one of the main reasons why the duke is no longer on talking terms with his brother Prince William, 42, because in the book, he had accused William of physically attacking him.
Talking about whether Harry understood how the memoir could damage relationships between him and royal relatives, a source told Vanity Fair: “I don’t know if that’s something he understood while he was doing it.”
Despite swirling divorce rumours, sources also claim that the couple’s love life has not hit a rocky patch in their lives.
A source who has worked closely with the couple said: “They are so hot for each other. Like, you know how you meet those couples where you’re like, the way they’re looking at each other, I should probably not be here right now?”
