Prince Harry made a surprise appearance for Travelyst, an initiative he launched to make travel more sustainable, but royal experts have pointed to a problem with his speech.
During the online appearance, Prince Harry said: “Travel and tourism rely on destinations, held together by communities, without which we have nowhere to travel to. Communities are the beating heart of travel, and we must do better by the people who are the custodians of the places we visit.”
However, several royal experts, speaking on the Mail’s Palace Confidential, have laid into the Duke for his use of private jets which have a much higher carbon footprint per person than commercial flights.
Expert Richard Eden savaged his appearance, saying: “This is the organisation that is always controversial – Harry, on the one hand, loves flying private jets whether it’s to a pop concert in Las Vegas or it’s to a holiday in the Caribbean but then he’s a boss at this firm that encourages other people to be very eco-conscious.”
Royal Editor Rebecca English commented: “I remember covering the launch of Travelyst – it’s a good idea it’s basically saying ‘let’s get all together all the interested parties in the travel industry and try to make travel a bit more environmentally friendly’ so I get that point.”
However, English claimed that “90 percent” of Prince Harry’s flights at the time of the launch were “private flights”.
