The Mediterranean country of Spain is hugely popular with holidaymakers, but certain spots like Barcelona can be off-putting because of how crowded they are. That’s why one less popular but amazing Spanish city should be on your radar – Murcia.
The travel gurus at Which? have named Murcia as one of the best destinations to visit in June if you want a taste of Spanish culture and warm temperatures, but without all the tourists.
Temperatures can reach up to 27C during this month, making it perfect for both sunbathing on the beach and exploring the quaint cobbled streets of the city. Like Barcelona, you really get the best of both worlds here with the coast and the city in close proximity to each other. The Costa Calida in the region of Murcia has about 250km of beautiful beaches, each with their own unique appeal.
According to the experts, Murcia is the least-visited part of Spain’s Mediterranean coast, with just 486 overnight stays per square km. Compared with 5,501 in its neighbour Alicante, it’s a far less busy option.
As a city, Murcia is warm and sunny, with fascinating architecture, brilliant food and interesting museums to explore. The region of Murcia also boasts another city called Cartagena, which is a must-visit for any history buffs.
This Spanish city, which is a port and naval base, was founded way back in 220BC and really thrived during the Roman period. To this day, you can still spot ruins all over the city, as well as some pretty impressive architecture from the Baroque era such as the Casa Maestra.
The facade of this building is the only original part that has been preserved since this period. It was designed by Gaudi, so it’s no wonder this city brings to mind Barcelona vibes, but without the throngs of tourists.
