POLL: Should over 70s have to retake their driving test? Vote now

Campaigners are calling for over-70s to be forced to retake their DVLA driving test in a pitch to “make roads safer” across the country. A new Parliament petition has called for road users to be tested every five years once they hit 70 to ensure they are safe behind the wheel.

If implemented, road users would be tested at 75, 80, 85, 90 and beyond to legally keep hold of their driving licence and retain their freedoms. Ashley Hart, the founder of the Parliament petition, said tests would be made “mandatory” so older road users would have no choice but to get assessed. However, the move could be popular with recent polls suggesting there was some support for older driver retests.  So what do you think? Under the current rules, drivers only have to self-certify that they are medically fit enough to stay behind the wheel.

There are no legal checks on road users’ eyesight or their driving skills before a new photocard licence is issued.

Rob Heard, founder of the Older Drivers Forum, is among some of the leading experts who have raised fears over the current system.

Rob has previously urged motorists above the age of 70 to consider getting a mature driver assessment every three years before applying for a renewal.

He told The Times: “Certainly when we get to the age of 70, rather than just ticking the box that we’re fit and healthy to drive, thinking about it and maybe going out and getting an assessment.

“At the age of 70, I think we should be looking at having one with every renewal.”
