POLL: Should elderly drivers be forced to retake their driving test at 65?

Older drivers would be forced to retake their driving test under new proposals put on the table by a campaigner.

A Parliament petition is calling for older motorists to be re-examined to keep hold of their driving licence once they hit 65.

Petition creator Deniss Fomins feels some elderly drivers pose a series of safety concerns and “should not” be on the roads.

He raised worries over elderly motorists’ vision while behind the wheel and their reaction times as he called on officials to make urgent changes.

The petition must receive 10,000 signatures by Thursday, February 22 to receive an official response from the Government.

If the petition gets over 100,000 signatures, the measure will be considered for debate in Parliament.

Now Express readers can have their say on the plans with our new interactive poll totting up the figures for both sides.

Outlining his case, Deniss said: “I would like the Government to require drivers to retake their driving at 65 if they want their driving licence to remain valid.

“I travel a lot, and often see older drivers who I believe should not be driving. Some misuse turn signals, others appear to have sight issues. Reactions also worsen with age.”

Last year, a poll from YouGov found there was general support for rule changes which would see older motorists being retested at 70.

The survey found 29 percent of adult respondents said they strongly supported a mandatory retake.

Meanwhile, a further 36 percent revealed they somewhat supported a rule change to introduce more testing.

A total of 15 percent said they somewhat opposed the measure with a further 12 percent strongly against the move.

However, when broken down by age there is a clear divide between the views of older and younger road users.

A staggering 83 percent of those between 18 and 24 strongly or somewhat supported the idea, remaining at 75 percent among adults between 25 and 49.

However, respondents aged 65 were more hesitant with just 35 percent throwing their weight behind the idea.

Back in 2022, Express.co.uk ran a poll on whether elderly drivers over 70 should face a retest with the overwhelming majority against the concept.

A whopping 86 percent (6,042 people) said they elderly motorists should not have to retake their driving test with just 13 percent claiming they should.
