Police have seized 50,000 counterfeit cigarettes after pulling over a driver who was using his phone while on the motorway. The man was spotted by officers speaking into his handset while driving on Junction 13 of the M6 Southbound. Upon being stopped, he attempted to lie to the police by claiming his wife was in labour.

He also gave false details, but the officers discovered that he was actually banned from driving. Even more shockingly, they found 50,000 fake cigarettes stashed in his boot. Staffordshire Road Crime Team, who shared the incident on social media, said: “We stopped this car on M6 SB J13 due to mobile phone use.

“Driver pretended his wife was in labour and provided false details.

“We saw straight through them and found them to be disqualified with 50,000 counterfeit cigarettes in the boot. Not today.”

A photo released by the force showed the man handcuffed and sitting on the passenger seat, with boxes of cigarettes visible in the boot and on the hard shoulder.
