Police insist ‘no connection’ after four bodies found on beach in three days | UK | News

Police say there is no connection between the sudden death of a woman and the deaths of a man and two other women on a Yorkshire beach. North Yorkshire Police said they were called at 11.01am yesterday to Sandsend, near Whitby, following reports of a woman’s body below the cliffs behind the main car park. Teams from the police, ambulance, coastguard, lifeboat, and fire service attended.

The force added that the woman’s body was recovered at 12.55pm, and the scene was reopened at 2.15pm following “extensive enquiries”. It has been confirmed that the woman is aged in her 50s and from the local area. Officers say they are supporting the woman’s family at this difficult time. The death is not being treated as suspicious, and a report is being prepared for the coroner. Witnesses to the incident or anyone with information that could assist officers have been urged to contact police on 101 quoting reference number 12250143585.

Police made sure to point out in their statement that there are no connections between this sudden death and the sudden deaths of a man and a woman below Whitby Abbey on July 30, nor the sudden death of a woman in the same location on July 31.

The latest statement read: “At 11.01am today (Saturday, August 2, 2025), emergency services were alerted to Sandsend, near Whitby, following reports of a woman’s body below the cliffs behind the main car park.

“Teams from the police, ambulance, coastguard, lifeboat, and fire service attended.

“The woman’s body was recovered at 12.55pm and the scene was reopened at 2.15pm following extensive enquiries.

“It has been confirmed that the woman is aged in her 50s and from the local area.

“Officers are supporting the woman’s family at this difficult time.

“The death is not being treated as suspicious and a report is being prepared for the coroner.”

It added: “PLEASE NOTE: THERE ARE NO CONNECTIONS BETWEEN THIS SUDDEN DEATH, THE SUDDEN DEATHS OF A MAN AND A WOMAN BELOW WHITBY ABBEY ON WEDNESDAY 30 JULY 2025, OR THE WOMAN BELOW WHITBY ABBEY ON THURSDAY 31 JULY 2025.”

A force spokesperson said on August 1: “We are investigating the sudden death of a woman aged in her 60s whose body was spotted by a member of the public below Whitby Abbey at 12.53pm on Thursday (July 31, 2025).

“Police, ambulance, coastguard, mountain rescue, and lifeboat teams were called in to assist with the incident, which is believed to have involved a fall from the cliff.

“Due to the rocky location and high tide, mountain rescue assisted in recovering the woman’s body to the lifeboat before being taken to the lifeboat house.

“Enquiries are ongoing to investigate the circumstances for a coroner’s report.”

Earlier in the week, emergency services teams recovered the bodies of a man and a woman.

A member of the public called the police at 7.16pm, Wednesday, July 30, after seeing a man and woman on the rocks below.

Witnesses to either of the deaths or anyone with information that could assist officers have been urged to call North Yorkshire Police on 101 quoting reference number 12250141734.
