PM urged to back move to avoid Prince Harry and Meghan Markle becoming King and Queen

Rishi Sunak has been urged to back plans that would block Prince Harry and Meghan Markle from becoming King and Queen.

As it stands, Prince Harry is fifth-in-line to the throne, and should a tragedy occur to both the King and Prince William’s family, Prince Harry would find himself at the helm of the crown.

Calls have already been made to have the Sussexes stripped of their titles and privileges as they decided to step back from royal duties.

Daily Mail’s diary editor Richard Eden said the government should back Bob Seely’s proposed Bill, which would remove the titles of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, and also added that PM Rishi Sunak should be encouraging the King to have their titles removed.

He said on YouTube show Palace Confidential: “We are in a legal position where if something awful happened, and we lost Prince William and his family and The King, it would be Harry and Meghan on the throne.

“Can you imagine that? King Henry and Queen Meghan – that needs to be addressed and they need to be removed from the line of succession.”

Attacks on the royal family from the couple, which have come in the form of bombshell interviews, documentaries and Prince Harry’s tell-all Spare memoir have led to growing calls for the removal of their titles.

The release of Omid Scobie’s Endgame has only worsened the situation, with deeply damaging information included in the book throwing Buckingham Palace into crisis.

But while calls are growing to remove their titles, royal editor Rebecca English dismissed any notion that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s titles could be removed, after speaking to an insider.

She was told Charles would “never strip them of their titles”, adding: “They were given to them by Queen Elizabeth, out of respect he wouldn’t, but he doesn’t want to completely destroy or humiliate his son and he thinks it would look very punitive for him to do so.”

Daily Mail’s editor at large Richard Kay also agreed with Rebecca English: “I think there is no chance he would do this to his son”, he said. “I think the one thing people forget is that if [their titles] were let’s say to be removed, Meghan would revert to taking her name from her husband.

“As her husband is a born prince and would remain Prince Harry, she would become Princess Harry, bit like Princess Michael of Kent, and in America, they think princesses are superior to duchesses anyway.”

He concluded: “It would just be more publicity, more mega bucks for them”.

King Charles is also unlikely to remove the couple’s titles because the monarch is pushing for friendlier relations with both Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, and is reportedly keen on seeing his grandchildren Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

The King has even been dropping subtle hints for the couple to join the royals at Sandringham for Christmas, an invite the Sussexes would accept if it was extended, according to insiders, though no official invites have yet been sent.
