Petrol and diesel owners could save £268 in 2024 by taking a new approach

Petrol and diesel drivers could save a staggering £268 per year on fuel in 2024 by changing their approach to topping up, according to experts.

Specialists at Hippo Leasing have warned that simply shopping around for the best deals could dramatically reduce final bills.

Analysis shows that finding the best offers in the area could save road users up to £16.77 per tank of petrol.

The average motorist fully fills up their tank around 16 times per year meaning staggering savings can be made.

Over the course of 12 months, drivers are likely to have kept hundreds of pounds in their pocket with predictions putting this at around £268.32.

Tom Preston, Managing Director and automotive expert at Hippo Leasing said extending a trip to reach better prices would pay off.

He explained: “Don’t wait for your dashboard light to flash to tell you to fill up.

“It will cost you on average 29p to drive an extra few miles to a cheaper station in the area. This would be worthwhile if the savings on pence per litre are dramatic enough.”

Those interested in finding the best offers nearby can usually find these on online apps such as PetrolPrices.

The data shows road users in Coventry have the most to gain by shopping around with a staggering difference in costs across the city.

The most expensive petrol station charges a whopping 167.9p per litre compared to just 128.9p elsewhere.

Driving between the two stations would cost just 29p with road users likely to save almost £17 for the extra effort.

Leicester is the second most affected area with road users likely to save a whopping £261.44 per year by looking around.

Motorists in Wigan will likely save £242.17 every 12 months while those in Reading could keep an extra £240 in their back pockets

The data shows combustion owners will also save over £200 in 2024 if they follow the tip in Stoke-on-Trent, Southampton, Milton Keynes, Northampton and Nottingham.

Those based in Swansea will have an extra £199.52 per year or £12.47 after every top-up.

However, savings can be made almost anywhere with over £106 likely to be kept back across an average of 50 cities across the country.
