Cleaning the bathroom may not be the most exciting household chore, but it’s a very important one to keep on top of.
Shower screens, sinks and toilets can all become covered in water and limescale marks, and if they’ve been building up for a while, they can be a bit of a nightmare to get rid of.
And it’s no secret that cleaning products can all add up, especially if you’re using many different ones to tackle the various jobs around your bathroom.
However, experts have now unveiled a very cheap alternative using a 1p kitchen scrap that many of us will come across every day.
Cleaning expert and director of Daily Poppins, Nigel Bearman, has revealed a surprisingly effective and budget-friendly alternative to expensive chemical cleaners – used tea bags.
He says you can clean your entire bathroom with a single used tea bag, as they serve as a cost-effective, natural cleaning solution that many of us will already have at home.
But if you don’t, a pack of 240 from Asda will cost you £3.20 – making each one work out at just over 1p.
“Don’t throw away your used tea bags,” Nigel advised. “Instead, set them aside and use them on your shower screens, taps and even your toilet for a streak-free shine.”
Tea bags contain natural chemical compounds called tannins, which have antibacterial and grease-cutting properties. These compounds help break down dirt, grime, and oily residue, making tea an effective natural cleaner.
So, the next time you make yourself a cup of tea, let the tea bag cool down on the side whilst you enjoy your brew. Then simply rub the damp tea bag over any affected areas to lift dirt and wipe dry with a microfiber cloth.
Nigel explained: “The tannins work to dissolve grease and lift dirt, leaving your surfaces streak-free and sparkling. It’s an easy, eco-friendly way to maintain spotless windows without relying on any harsh chemicals.”
The best part is that whenever you’re done cleaning, you can compost the used tea bags.
This simple trick not only saves money but also reduces waste, making it a win-win for both your home and the environment.
However, it’s not just the bathroom that can benefit from your used tea bags. They’re also great for degreasing pots and pans, and all you have to do is soak them in warm water with a couple of the bags for a few hours.
The tannins will help to break down any grease, making them easier to wash up.
You can also steep a used tea bag in a glass of water and use this to dampen a microfiber cloth, and gently wipe down your wooden surfaces for a natural shine.
The tannins enhance the wood’s colour while removing dust and grime.
Finally, used tea bags can also act as a natural deodoriser for your shoes. Simply place dry, used tea bags inside your shoes overnight, and they’ll absorb unwanted odours, leaving your footwear fresher.
