Peace lilies will produce ‘more flowers’ if one task is completed regularly

Peace lilies are a firm favourite among houseplant owners thanks to their distinct dark and glossy leaves and pretty white flowers.

They can also act as natural air purifiers, helping to draw out moisture and toxins from the environment.

However, if you have ever had a peace lily at home, you’ll know that getting them to produce those white blooms regularly can be quite the challenge.

Thankfully, experts at the Royal Horticultural Society say there’s an easy way around this, by carrying out one simple task that promotes flower growth.

In a YouTube video, the pros revealed exactly how to care for your peace lily plants, including one very important tip for when the flowers begin to fade.

In the video, RHS ambassador Jamie Butterworth revealed exactly how to keep those white flowers coming back healthier than ever throughout the year.

Raving about the peace lily, he said: “Its easy-to-grow nature makes it the ideal starter houseplant and a perfect gift.

“Not only does it bring greenery indoors but it can also enhance any room, and they are brilliant air purifiers.”

He recommended placing it in a room with partial shade away from direct sunlight is key, but make sure the room isn’t too shady as they may not flower as well as they could do.

And if you’re finding the flowers tend to fade fast, then you’ll need to start cutting them back more often, which will improve their overall health.

Jamie said: “Cut back the faded flowers once they’ve started to do their thing, as the more you deadhead, the more flowers you’ll receive.”

Where you keep your peace lily at home also makes a huge difference. Since their natural environment is the forest floor, they thrive best when they’re kept warm – anything 21C and above.

And as we start to head into spring, it’s even more important to give your peace lilies the care they need – which includes repotting at around this time of year.

Jamie said: “Repotting annually in spring is fantastic for the health of a peace lily, as the plants will really appreciate the refreshed soil.

“Wait until the roots have completely filled the original pot, and then pot them on.”
