One in five parents believe their child has been left out of a party because of their food allergies, new research reveals. A poll of 500 parents of children with intolerances found that 40 per cent think other parents are afraid of buying the wrong food, while more than half worry their child is missing out on fun and friendship because of dietary restrictions.

Two-thirds have overheard conversations about parties their child wasn’t invited to, with 84 per cent of those believing allergies were the reason. On average, parents estimate their child has missed out on four parties due to their dietary needs.

The research, commissioned by plant-based chocolate brand NOMO, comes as the company launches an allergy-friendly birthday cake bar.

Tara Stevens from NOMO said: “It’s often an added worry catering for a child with things you’re not familiar with, especially when allergies are involved.

“But every child deserves to feel included, safe, and celebrated. That’s why it’s important for there to be foods everyone can enjoy, so no one has to miss out on the joy of parties and shared moments.”

More than a quarterare always concerned their child will accidentally eat something unsafe at parties, and six in ten say their child has sometimes been unable to eat anything at all.

A third of parents admit they are unlikely to leave their child at a party without being there to supervise what they’re eating and 67 per cent regularly send their child with backup snacks, such as fruits, vegetables, and rice cake. Most (72 per cent) also bring allergy-free treats to parties.

It was also reported that a third of children have been teased because of their allergy. As such, parents recommend always asking about dietary requirements in advance, and suggest avoiding common allergens like nuts, so there are food choices everyone can enjoy.

Tara Stevens, from NOMO, which has also launched a range of chocolate lollies as part of its range, added: “These findings highlight how important it is for us all to be more mindful and inclusive.

“A little extra care can make a huge difference in helping every child feel welcome, safe, and part of the fun.

“Which is why it’s so important to us that parents can feel confident that all our products are free from the top 14 allergens.”
