Orchids will have 'big huge blooms' with gardener's top three simple care tricks

The expert’s top care tricks for orchids went viral when he posted a video to TikTok.

Appealing to thousands of people, the expert said: “Do not overcomplicate orchid care; they are by far one of the easiest houseplants to care for.”

Showing off his beautiful orchid blooms, which he insisted has bloomed every year that he’s had the plant, the expert revealed how you can have recurrent blooms too.

“Right now, it has three different bloom stocks on it,” the expert said. “And the only thing I’ve done to this orchid in three years is give it light and water.”

He added: “And, occasionally, I cut something brown off of it.”

Turning the viewers’ attention to an old brown stock that is an offshoot from a green stem, he proceeded to cut the brown part off.

“That’s one of my rules with orchids,” the expert revealed, referencing the need to cut off any brown parts of a stem.

“Here is what is so cool about orchids,” the expert continued. “They actually tell you when they need water.”

He explained that green roots mean the orchid is “properly hydrated” whereas silver roots signify the need to water the orchid.

The expert insisted: “It doesn’t need any type of special water; just give it tap water. That’s fine.

“It doesn’t need distilled water… don’t water it with ice cubes; these are tropical plants. It doesn’t need extra humidity if you give it proper watering.”

The expert is also not a fan of repotting the orchid every year, nor is he that keen on fertiliser, which he admitted would make more leaves grow but isn’t necessary for the flower to bloom.

He reckons that people are scared to water their orchids, but clarified that most orchids are natives of the rainforest so they do appreciate watering.

“Just make sure they have good drainage,” he insisted, noting that orchids give you “big, huge blooms”.

The expert emphasised that the orchid is “simple” to care for and “exciting” to watch bloom. He added: “It’s just a really good plant to grow in your house.”

A TikTok user asked: “Mine keeps growing leaves, but no bloom stalks. Ideas?” The expert replied: “More light!”

And there you have it – give enough water and light, as well as pruning when needed, to encourage orchids to rebloom.
