Locals heroically intervened as a young girl was savagely attacked by a dog in Kirkby last night. Emergency services dashed to Dulas Green just before 6pm on Thursday, May 29, after receiving distressing calls about two people being bitten by a canine.

A seven-year-old lass suffered bites to her arm and leg, while a 22-year-old woman endured puncture wounds to her leg, arm, and hand.

Both were rushed hospital for medical attention, with their injuries not considered life-threatening. The dog, thought to be a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, was apprehended by police.

An eyewitness, choosing to stay unnamed, shared his chilling experience of witnessing the ordeal. He described hearing children ‘screaming’ and saw them dashing down the street; one girl managed to flee up his path, but the other fell victim to the vicious dog.

He recounted to the ECHO: “When we looked back, the dog had actually got one of the girl’s and pulled her to the ground. I ran over then and my wife threw bricks at the dog, which you can see smashed on the ground, and they just bounced off the dog’s head.

“I ran to get a brush and by that time it already had a few bites. By the time I got the brush and got it away it was over [the road].”

The man reported that when a neighbour came out to help, the dog attacked him and his daughters, with one daughter sustaining bite injuries.

He said: “[The neighbour] got the dog to the ground and he was holding it down. Then I ran in [the house] to get a cage and I assembled the cage and said ‘we’ve got to get this dog in the cage or it’s going to get out’. We then managed to get it in.”

He described the dog as “very powerful and had big jaws” and shared his disbelief, stating, “You read about these things and think ‘Jesus Christ’ but don’t expect it on your doorstep.”

Later that evening, police cordoned off Dulas Green as the ECHO team arrived, with forensic officers arriving later to take photographs for evidence.

At the height of the emergency, an air ambulance landed on nearby green space, and a local recounted seeing about 15 police cars and two ambulances at the scene.

Police have confirmed they are continuing their inquiries into the incident.
