Naomi Osaka stormed into the National Bank Open quarterfinals on Sunday with a swift victory over Anastasija Sevastova, winning 6-1, 6-0 in just 49 minutes amidst blustery conditions. This marks the second-fastest win of her career, following a 42-minute triumph in a 2016 event in Brazil where she defeated Ana Sofia Sánchez 6-1, 6-1.
This achievement sees Osaka reaching the final eight of a WTA 1000 or Grand Slam event for the first time in 19 months. She is set to face off against the victor of a night match between fifth-seed Amanda Anisimova from the United States and Ukraine’s 10th-seeded Elina Svitolina on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Madison Keys, the sixth seed from the United States, also progressed, overcoming 11th-seeded Karolina Muchova of Czechia 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 in the windy afternoon session. The Australian Open champion will next face the winner of a night match between Poland’s second-seeded Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek and Denmark’s 16th-seeded Clara Tauson.
