Mum uses 30p kitchen item to remove mould from grout and leave it looking ‘a lot whiter’

Cleaning enthusiasts have discovered a kitchen ingredient that’s adept at tackling stubborn mould on bathroom grout, leaving it significantly whiter.

Lemons are an excellent source of citric acid, retail for a mere 30p each at Tesco, which is substantially less than the cost of mould-tackling products on the market.

Writing on The Plumbette website, one cleaning enthusiast shared her experience after using the fruit to treat discolouration between her bathroom tiles.

“I had noticed that the outer rim of our bath in the girls’ bathroom had started to grow mould in the grout and I thought I’d give it a squeeze of lemon juice to see if it would get rid of the mould,” she wrote on her blog.

“When it comes to natural cleaners I have had mixed results. I have tried the whole bicard soda and vinegar action and it’s not a cleaning routine I’ve maintained.”

“Sometimes it’s cost me more than the Dettol or Spray and Wipe that I use because I often shake a whole box of soda in one cleaning product.”

For the cleaning experiment, the homeowner cut one lemon and squeezed the juice along the grout, letting the liquid sit for 10 minutes.

“I used a damp cloth to clean away the juice and most of the mould went and the grout was a lot whiter than it was before,” she explained.

“Unfortunately, there were still mould marks in the silicone section which means the mould is in the silicone and the only way to get rid of it is to remove that silicone and re-apply around that the bath.”

The citric acid in lemons is the key mould combatant since it qualifies as both an abacterial and antiseptic, with the bonus of leaving a refreshing scent.

Cleaning experts often endorse the method of pairing lemon juice with baking soda to cut through the mould with even more efficiency.

As with the aforementioned hack, the juice can be mixed with a teaspoon of baking soda, until the ingredients turn into a paste.

Once the grout has been treated with the product, it can be scrubbed away with a toothbrush, which will remove any lingering discolouration.
