“My tumble dryer has packed up and now my towels are like Ryvita crackers.”

Towels can turn rough for several reasons, including using too much detergent or fabric softener which can leave a residue on the laundry item.

As well as this, drying towels on an airer or outside can prevent them from going soft, which is why a number of people opt to use their tumble dryers.

Luckily, there are many ways to keep towels nice and soft without using the expensive appliance.

Alison Riddell commented: “Use white vinegar instead of softener, can assure you there is no vinegar smell at all.”

Brian Sumner wrote: “Don’t use any conditioner, put white vinegar in conditioner drawer instead, it’s amazing.”

Dianne Harrison added: “Cheap white vinegar does wonders for towels and laundry, whitens and strips leftover washing powder.”

White vinegar can be picked up for as little as 29p from supermarkets such as Tesco and can be used for a variety of jobs.

As well as stripping any residues left on the towels, it can also work to deodorise them too.

White vinegar shouldn’t be used every single time towels are washed, which is every three days according to experts. Instead, make sure to use it every six weeks or so to help breathe life back into the rough towels.

As well as using white vinegar, washing them at a certain temperature can also help to keep them soft.

According to Jessica Hanley, founder of Piglet in Bed, said: “This will help achieve your desired softness, eliminating bacteria in the process.

“In the summer months, take advantage of the sun to let your towels air dry – the ultimate all-natural dryer that helps maintain the integrity of the fabric, and keeps your towels soft and fresh.”

When it comes to storing towels, the expert recommended folding them. This helps to save space and ensure they stay in good shape.

The expert explained: “Begin by holding the short end of the towel at chest heigh, and then fold each edge across to meet the opposite side fold to achieve neatly overlapping thirds.

“Fold up the bottom third of the towel, then fold the top third down, and store with the outer folded edge of the towel facing out to make it easy to grab your towels off the shelf – and to keep your closet looking great.”
